10 Influential Monkeys You Should Follow on Twitter

Highlighting social monkeys on Twitter is a great way to make friends and more importantly get links & web traffic, so here are 10 influential monkeys to follow on Twitter. The foundation for this recommendation; all 10 monkeys have 1000+ followers. Surely any monkey with 1000 followers must be influential. When these monkeys tweet peel a banana, followers go ape shit. Monkey see, monkey do. Three cheers to influence!

If you are a monkey and aren’t on this list yet, don’t despair. Goto wefollow.com, type in “monkey”, and start clicking the button. Other monkeys will follow you back and soon you will have 1000 followers and be eligible for inclusion in the followup to this post, “I’m a Monkey Too”. It’s really that easy. Again, it’s that easy.

One school of thought making it’s way around the inter-web is that follower counts are the foundation for determining influence. Does this account influence you to do anything?

[Twitter] Improving the user experience

I recently created my fifth Twitter account for an upcoming iPhone project called MortgageZen. Each of my accounts has a specific intended audience. Each one, a loose set of rules that guide decisions on who I follow. Some of my twitter id’s are focused on building a strong following, others I’m less concerned with # of followers.

Because of the multiple accounts, I’ve noticed that “follow” philosophies can be simplified into two main camps. On one hand, there is the “Follow me, Follow you” approach. The network happens on the mutual expectation of a push of the button resulting in a “follow” action. The other, more selective approach is the “If I’m interested, I’ll follow you” technique. This approach is different in that you only follow people that you like or that add value to your life in some way.

For my primary account on Twitter, I’m selective about whom I choose to follow. I keep my follow counts down to a reasonable number that I feel comfortable keeping up with. But as I meet new folks that I’d like to follow, the noise level inevitably ratchets up. Programs like TweetDeck offer temporary relief by allowing me to place people into groups, but these applications (I’m looking at you Nambu) don’t yet support group membership syncing between devices and as follow counts grow, so too, does the noise level.

So what might solve this problem?

My hope is that Twitter will continue to introduce methods for users to optionally reduce noise. Two suggestions, the ability to selectively hide excessive Re-Tweeters and the ability to hide @replies between people I follow. Granular control over aspects of the conversation that I want to toggle off would make Twitter more valuable. More thoughts, ideas, & jokes, less regurgitation & water-cooler banter. Don’t get me wrong, I like the banter but I want the ability to limit the noise.

Essential Firefox Extensions: TwitterFox

Props to TwitterFox. As the name implies, TwitterFox is an extension that allows you to manage a twitter account from within the Firefox browser.

After installing and configuring the extension, TwitterFox works silently in the background aggregating tweets until you are ready to read them. To see all the new activity, just click on the TwitterFox icon located in the status bar at the bottom of the browser screen.

TwitterFox is a simple and clean alternative to twhirl or TweetDeck, which are applications that need to be installed on a local drive. I prefer embedding Twitter activity within the browser as it seems more accessible and efficient than running a separate stand-alone application. The greatest strength of the lightweight application is the ability to manage multiple Twitter ID’s quickly.

As Twitter gains in popularity and the resulting noise gets harder to filter, TwitterFox might not remain as a viable solution, but for now simple rules the day. Give it a try.

Obtain and Manage Multiple User ID’s On Twitter

There is buzz in the ‘TwitterSphere’ about managing multiple Twitter ID’s. Multiple ID’s make sense for those using Twitter to microblog both personal and professional audiences.

I manage Twitter accounts effortlessly from within my browser with the TwitterFox extension for FireFox. Other options are standalone applications like TweetDeck or Twhirl. Both are free and both allow you to manage multiple Twitter ID’s.

Twitter sites like TwitterCounter & TweetLater are examples of the extended functionality possible with Twitter data. We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Twitter is changing the paradigm of dialogue. Teaching us all to communicate with more purpose, efficiency, & effectiveness.

Why Multiple User Id’s?

@jbinfrisco: The primary Twitter account. Used to record thoughts and conversations on both personal and professional topics. A digital vapor trail for what’s on my mind. This ID is also the moniker that I choose for most social networks within which I participate. If the intent of use is not clear or I’m ambivalent at sign-up, I’ll use jbinfrisco. By design, it’s unique has always been available everywhere I want to play.

@jbermangroup: This is a professional Twitter account. It’s primary purpose is to post information to The J. Berman Group website via the Twitter Tools plug-in for WordPress.

This works because Google Reader has been configured to capture any webpage that I want to share with my clients. If I see a good article, it gets added to gReader and from there it is one click to Twitter. Mortgage, Real Estate, & Technology content streamed simply and for free to the J. Berman Group website.

@reblogworld: Event feed to raise awareness and make the case for attending REBlogWorld.

@jberman: Primarily used for blip.fm tweets. It’s a repository for tweet streams generated by websites that I interact with. Sending these tweets to a third account gives your followers an option to take it or leave it and eliminates the possibility of overwhelming those who don’t care that you are a ‘hip-hop gangsta wanna-be’.

Everyone is drowning in noise. Give your followers a break and the choice to filter you. Something to think about if nothing else.

How many Twitter ID’s are you using? What is your philosophy for Twitter?

Sunday Morning Coffee – iPhone, Frightened Rabbit, Intelligent Design movie “Expelled”

I bought an iPhone! I was trying to make it until November when my contract was up with Sprint but alas, I’m weak. It didn’t help that my Treo 700p had been acting up, or that I had another avid iPhone fan encounter (thanks Tasha), or that they bumped the memory up to 16GB. I coughed up the $200 penalty and decided to jump in. Of course, my device superiority will be short-lived as the 3G phone will be here soon (Apple 3G phone).

I’m completely blown away. The screen, the engineering, the user interface are magnificent. The onscreen keyboard is a little tricky but I’m starting to get it. Weather, stocks, email, music, photos, etc., all in one little magic box. It’s not all love, I hate the headphone jack. Some genius figured out how to extract a few more dollars by putting a recessed jack into the phone. If you plan to buy an expensive pair of headphones, make sure its iPhone compatible, otherwise you will have to carry an adapter.

I’m really into the song “Heads Roll Off” by Frightened Rabbit. I think they sound a bit like Counting Crows. Anyway, give my Tumblr a listen. Also, If you are a music fan, sign up for Last.fm. It’s an up and coming social music website.

Much buzz about the showing of the Intelligent Design film “Expelled” in Minneapolis this past Friday. Best place to get a ‘biased’ synopsis is here. Interestingly, Ben Stein fronts for the documentary, I’d be curious to hear how that happened. Does he really believe this garbage should be taught in public schools?
Intelligent Design aka Creationism is a Trojan horse designed to get faith-based education into the classroom. It is there, among the minds of youth, that Creationists hope to perpetuate their fantasy.

Religion confounds me. The beauty of religion is that it strives to guide us on how to be better to each other and to ourselves. Since most people don’t seem to actively seek out self-improvement, they rely on religion to supply their inspiration and motivation. The irony is that most of humanity’s suffering & bloodshed is caused by religious zealotry & fanaticism.

I think a few centuries from now, the role of religion in society will be diminished. There will be other institutions or methods to obtain moral and ethical direction. Technology & the information revolution we are currently going through will accelerate this awakening. Especially among those that currently don’t question or challenge the answers they are spoon-fed.

Enjoy your Sunday. Ah, one more thing, I’m now twittering. Check out the widget at the top left corner. Do you use twitter? It’s approaching 1,000,000 users. If so shoot me a ‘follow’ and let’s connect.
