Ok, so I’m a convention whore. I’m at MacWorld this week. Day 1 has been a huge disappointment. We got up at 6:00am so that we could get in line ‘early’ to see the Steve Jobs keynote. Braving the chilly (but not unbearable) weather, we stood in line for two plus hours patiently waiting. Once we got within 10 feet we were notified that both the speaker hall and the overflow were full. I’m not sure what I paid the full conference fee for as the keynote was the primary motivation. Hundreds (if not thousands) of people were left outside pissed off.

It’s confusing who to get upset with about the situation. MacWorld runs the show but they are blaming Apple. Even Apple employees were left out of the phone. As one Mac Genius from NY said, “This is embarrassing for us (apple).”

Refusing to be denied we bum rushed the door and squeezed by security. I’m not sure if I was motivated by a desire to get warm or because I wanted to see how the event planners handled the complaints. Somehow I managed to get in with a small group of disgruntles that got the VP of the show organizers in person.

This poor guy was getting bashed from every one of us. Finally, he agreed to offer refunds and to do something for us in 2008 (guaranteed spot in line would be nice). I guess I have to see how the rest of the show goes before I agree to come back. My complaints:

No Crowd Control & people cutting in line.

Why are they selling more registrations than seats.

Why aren’t they telling people who are waiting in line after it was full?

If Apple is the streaming media king, how come they can’t set up more rooms with video feeds?

Organized chaos.

Apple is definitely going through some growing pains. I wish I was a convert about two years earlier as it sounds like this is the first year with these issues. Like anything that gets big, their success could inhibit their growth if they continue to treat their avid consumer base so poorly. I like to think Apple isn’t a big corporate behemoth but at the end of the day, they are just trying to get me to part with my money too. Like (dot) .Mac & Apple One to One, I’m not impressed.

Anyway, I’m sitting in on the MacBreak podcast, let’s hope Leo Laporte, Merlin Mann, & the rest of the gang can lift my spirits.
