A few thoughts on Folders for iOS4

iOS4 folder feature

I’ve been using an iPhone since the days of the 1G. During that span, I’ve tried hundreds of apps. Prior to iOS4 it wasn’t practical nor possible to install every app on the device at one time.

The only way to get any sort of organization on an iPhone was to jailbreak the phone and install an app called Categories. This app was extremely popular as it gave users the ability to organize the phone and drop apps inside top-level category folders. This made it possible to consolidate eight pages of apps into one page of folder icons.

However, Categories also made the phone unstable. Some apps, like the camera app, didn’t behave if placed inside a folder. If the phone was restored while Categories was enabled, any app that had been assigned to a category wouldn’t show up after the restore. It wasn’t fun. It was a giant pain in the ass.

Having had access to iOS4 for a few months, I’ve had time to evaluate and experience the discovery & joy of it’s newest features. One of the most significant UI upgrades is folders. Like most software features that Apple develops, it took awhile but the finished product works brilliantly.

Dragging apps in and out of the folder with one finger is easy and intuitive. To get started, Apple lends a hand by suggesting folder titles for apps with similar genres. Folders can be created on the phone and in iTunes but I’d recommend using iTunes to complete the initial organization of your apps as it’s much easier to move them where you want, via the desktop.

Locating obscure apps will be a breeze compared to what previously existed before iOS4. In addition, since similar apps can now be grouped, evaluation and comparison among them becomes easier. I’ve already winnowed a dozen apps from iTunes that I no longer want or feel I need.

With respect to folders, one advantage **jailbreaking** still offers is the option to customize the folder icon. Apple’s icon displays smaller versions of the apps within a folder. Unless the new glass on the iPhone 4 dramatically livens up those tiny icons, I’d rather have the option to choose icons that visually enhance the user experience. Meaning, I’ll probably explore jailbreaking again when George Hotz & friends release their latest exploit.

** jailbreaking is not available for iOS4…..yet

Essential JailBreak Application List

I wanted to keep a record in EverNote about my basic jailbreak install so that the next time I screwed up the phone and had to restore**, I could pull up my list and reinstall the apps I wanted again. Cydia allows for search and this is often the fastest way to get favorite components back on the phone. However, as I thought more about the list, I realized it would be more useful to share here in the hopes that others could use it as a guide and add their own discoveries. Frankly, there still aren’t many people willing to hack their phones. Perhaps seeing the usefulness of stretching the capabilities via this list will get some folks over the ‘fear factor’.

Remember, if you have a solid backup of the phone, you can’t hurt anything by trying. You can always go back to iTunes and restore the phone to the way it was prior to JailBreak.

**Things I’ve learned: Beware of Stacks 2.1, Don’t take the Phone app out of the home dock if you are running Categories, Don’t run Categories (too much hassle, creates instability)**

Apps and UI tweaks available after jailbreak of 3GS.

Essential Upgrades

  • WinterBoard, SBSettings – Both of these applications should be the first apps installed after jailbreak (after Cydia recommended upgrades). Without getting into geektails, Winterboard allows you to ‘theme’ the phone. SBSettings allows you to control many of the basic functions of the phone without having to go digging thru the Settings app. Turning bluetooth, wifi, 3G on & off is much easier and quite addictive w/SBS.

Applications

  • Qik – Video stream application, somewhat muted by the new OS 3.0 release that includes video for some iPhones (3Gs). Qik enables video for earlier iPhones.
  • MxTube – Download YouTube videos straight to the device.
  • QTweeter – Post to Twitter & Facebook from any application with one touch. Really cool little application.
  • MIVTones for 3.0 – This allows you to set up Video RingTones for pre-assigned contacts. Good way to Rick-Roll people without them knowing….
  • iBlackList – Creates a whitelist/blacklist so you can filter calls, SMS from groups or specific contacts
  • ScreenSplitter – Allows you to post iPhone video right to computer screen. Screencasts?
  • Offline Maps – For those times when you find yourself in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico….Offline Maps
  • Moon Phase – Figure out whats up with the moon. Wax on?

Functionality Enhancements

  • SpotBright: Add two functions to Spotlight ala famous QuickGold app that ran on 2.2 & earlier jailbreaks. Adds mobile spotlight access to hidden apps & memorizes last 5 apps launched for quick access. Very handy tweak.
  • VolumeBoost: Upgrades volume of iPhone to max levels available.
  • Emoji: Unlocks Emoji icons from Japanese Keyboard
  • AppFlow: A really nice coverflow browser. I’m using this on my homepage as another launcher. Erica Sadun made this about a year ago. I think there is another project now that incorporates this technology. Haven’t investigated yet.
  • Klear Weather: Presents a skin over the weather icon that pushes current weather information. Adds ability to publish temp to status bar.
  • SnapTunes, SnapCameraRoll: Allows for secondary camera rolls & syncing w/two iTunes libraries.

Visual enhancements

  • Sphere Battery, Blue Calc, Blue Tap, Glossy Dialer, BlueBox Cydia
  • Paradox, Stormy Black, Modern Simple: These are SBSettings themes that allow you to change the look and feel of SBS.
  • Reflective Dock, Fifth Column, Five Icon Dock: Jazz up your home screen & fit up to 25 icons per page.

Untested Downloads

  • ABGrouper: Allows for group creation, deletion, management in the Contacts application.
  • iConference: Conference calling functionality. Requires sign-up w/3rd party.

1.5 Billion & Counting

The App Store has counted 1.5 billion downloads in its first year of operation, according to Apple.

The iPhone as a Platform

Blackberry excluded, the handset makers are in trouble. Apple is extending its reach into all areas of the mobile social web. The gloves come off tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. Once the dust settles from the 3G release, the focus shifts to the applications being developed for the iPhone. Therein is the key to the iPhone’s potential and I believe, its future dominance.

Applications will propel the iPhone to greater success than its predecessor, the iPod, enjoyed. It isn’t just a phone. It’s a platform.

Sunday Morning Coffee – iPhone, Frightened Rabbit, Intelligent Design movie “Expelled”

I bought an iPhone! I was trying to make it until November when my contract was up with Sprint but alas, I’m weak. It didn’t help that my Treo 700p had been acting up, or that I had another avid iPhone fan encounter (thanks Tasha), or that they bumped the memory up to 16GB. I coughed up the $200 penalty and decided to jump in. Of course, my device superiority will be short-lived as the 3G phone will be here soon (Apple 3G phone).

I’m completely blown away. The screen, the engineering, the user interface are magnificent. The onscreen keyboard is a little tricky but I’m starting to get it. Weather, stocks, email, music, photos, etc., all in one little magic box. It’s not all love, I hate the headphone jack. Some genius figured out how to extract a few more dollars by putting a recessed jack into the phone. If you plan to buy an expensive pair of headphones, make sure its iPhone compatible, otherwise you will have to carry an adapter.

I’m really into the song “Heads Roll Off” by Frightened Rabbit. I think they sound a bit like Counting Crows. Anyway, give my Tumblr a listen. Also, If you are a music fan, sign up for Last.fm. It’s an up and coming social music website.

Much buzz about the showing of the Intelligent Design film “Expelled” in Minneapolis this past Friday. Best place to get a ‘biased’ synopsis is here. Interestingly, Ben Stein fronts for the documentary, I’d be curious to hear how that happened. Does he really believe this garbage should be taught in public schools?
Intelligent Design aka Creationism is a Trojan horse designed to get faith-based education into the classroom. It is there, among the minds of youth, that Creationists hope to perpetuate their fantasy.

Religion confounds me. The beauty of religion is that it strives to guide us on how to be better to each other and to ourselves. Since most people don’t seem to actively seek out self-improvement, they rely on religion to supply their inspiration and motivation. The irony is that most of humanity’s suffering & bloodshed is caused by religious zealotry & fanaticism.

I think a few centuries from now, the role of religion in society will be diminished. There will be other institutions or methods to obtain moral and ethical direction. Technology & the information revolution we are currently going through will accelerate this awakening. Especially among those that currently don’t question or challenge the answers they are spoon-fed.

Enjoy your Sunday. Ah, one more thing, I’m now twittering. Check out the widget at the top left corner. Do you use twitter? It’s approaching 1,000,000 users. If so shoot me a ‘follow’ and let’s connect.
