Breckenridge Ullr Fest brings 1st snow in 100 years to Baghdad?
It’s that time of year again. Ullr Fest has descended upon Breckenridge, CO. Ullr is the Nordic god of snow and locals have been celebrating the mythological character since 1963. The idea is to placate Ullr with lots of drink and debauchery so that he will reward the townsfolk and the mountain with lots of snow.
I first celebrated Ullr Fest in the late 80′s with some college buddies. Back then, the huge bonfire was held in the middle of town and locals threw in skis and just about anything else they could burn. I have been on a quiet quest to find out why the bonfire was moved to the wide open Nordic Center and from what I can surmise, CFC’s & passed out frozen ski bums had something to do with it.
Yesterday was the big parade. It worked so well that Ullr blessed Baghdad with it’s first snow in 100 years. Ullr is a powerful god. He is blessing Summit County frequently this year.
