Tumblr – Fun way to publish pics from your phone

My friend Sameer was raving about his brother’s Tumblr site to me tonight. I’d signed up for an account last month but hadn’t done much with it yet. I decided to revisit tonight and I think I get it now. If you have been looking for a way to put pics from your phone right up to the web with little effort….check this out.

I saw this sweet VW van sitting in the parking lot at Starbucks yesterday. I couldn’t help myself. I’d love to drive this thing around town for a few months. With Tumblr, snap a pic. Email it to a special address that Tumblr provides and you are all set.

The site will accept text, pics, video, links, & quotes. If only they added music I’d be hooked. Tumblr enables one to engage in Tumblelogs.

Why don’t they do music? Probably DRM.

{drifting off topic} I hate DRM. The music distribution industry is drowning in their own spew. It is also stifling the growth of new genres and mash-ups. Someday there will be a market driven model that eliminates the middle man in music delivery, freeing all the artists and consequently music fans everywhere. I’d love to dive into this more if it inspires any thoughts from others. Does it?

Back to tumblr. It would be fun to figure out how to embed your Tumblelog inside a wordpress or typepad blog. I’m sure it’s possible. If anybody reads this and knows how……show me the light!!

    Sameer’s brother here…
Much like blogs, and flickr, and twitter, and all these new webapps, you can RSS feed your tumblelog. At the bottom of your page you see the “subscribe via rss” link. That link can be added to WordPress as a sidebar RSS reader of some sort, and would display a certain number of your most recent posts. Pictures might be a bit more involved to get them to fit without taking over your blog…but…I don’t think it would be too bad.

I haven’t messed with my WordPress blog in about a year, so I offer limited support there.

Yeah, Disaster Risk Management pisses me off too! Errr wait, did you mean Doug Rippie Motorsports? Don’t hate on a guy just because he doesn’t drive a VW bus like you want to!

If you ever get serious about a VW bus, I know an expert you should consult with before a purchase.

How do you protect artists and songs from theft? The worst feeling in the world is when you see your work marketed better-I forgot where I saw, read or heard this comment, but it’s never the originator of an idea that capitalizes. Last time I checked, no one works for free.
